"STRUCTURAL CYBERNETICS" Organizational Structure and Workflows: the basic building blocks of structure, and how to combine them into entrepreneurial organization charts; plus how to establish high-performance teamwork and dynamic cross-boundary work flows
Structural Cybernetics is a breakthrough science of the design of organization charts and the cross-boundary work flows that make it work. It helps leaders build entrepreneurial job definitions around lines of business (rather than old-fashioned roles, responsibilities, and tasks). It includes clear principles to assemble lines of business into organization charts in ways that maximize synergies, specialization, and teamwork. And it specifies the mechanisms of cross-boundary teamwork that are necessary to make a structure based on specialization (versus "stovepipes") work.
The process begins with the senior leadership team. They study the science, and then collaboratively design the tier-one organization chart. Selected tier-one leaders develop clear domains (boundaries), and then define their products -- including products "sold" to one another as a basis for teamwork. Then, they rehearse work flows using real-life projects and services as examples. In large organizations, the process is repeated for tier-two leaders. Then, staff are rostered into the new organization based on what they do today. The announcement of the new structure is carefully planned. After it's announced, a meticulous migration process ensures that no commitments are lost in the change, and that the new structure takes effect fully and quickly.
Structural Cybernetics license: comprehensive documentation of the theory and the implementation process. Includes detailed description of all lines of business within organizations, suggestions for domains (boundaries), list of products for each including detailed definitions of deliverables, sample work flows, competencies, and guidelines on internal contracting.
Structure Check-point: a quick, interactive review of your current or proposed organization chart, identifying its inherent strengths and weaknesses. "Clean-Sheet-of-Paper" Restructuring process: comprehensive facilitation, or custom process -- a series of seminars and guided workshops for leaders to design and implement a new structure and cross-boundary work flows.
